Weekly Prayer Guide: How the Meek Inherit the Earth

. . . the meek shall inherit the land and
delight themselves in abundant peace.
(Psalm 37:11)

How are you doing today? As you look at the week ahead, do you feel grounded, confident to face whatever it may hold? Or do you not feel so sure?

For this week’s prayer guide, I want to talk about land.

. . . the meek shall inherit the land and delight themselves in abundant peace. (Psalm 37:11)

The recurring theme in Psalm 37 is the promise of peaceful occupation in the land. David, the psalm’s author, was referring to actual land, Israel, but 1,000 years later Jesus gave the king’s words new meaning, extending their reach to the entire earth.

Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth. (Matthew 5:5)

Considering the soaring price of real estate, I guess it pays to be meek. All dad jokes aside, if we pay close attention to David’s and Jesus’ words, we’ll see that while this promise does include “physical land,” there’s more to it than that.

Response

Every one of us, whether we own a piece of real estate or not, has land to inherit. The Land is any space God has given you to occupy, to cultivate, to steward, to possess—think of your marriage, your work, your friendships, etc. This is your Land. And the meek learn to peacefully possess their Land.

But the proud—those who hope in their own sufficiency—will be restless in their marriages, their work, their friendships, their calling, etc. Their blessings have become burdens, and their backs are bent by the cares of life.

The meek—i.e., those who fear God—dwell secure in the Land, while the proud—those who fear man—are restless, struggling to find a safe place to call home.

This week I want to challenge you to look at your Land. Take inventory of the spaces God has called you to possess. Where have you relied on your own sufficiency? Quiet your heart, repent, and ask God for the grace that comes with humility. He wants you to inherit the Land, in all its fullness.

Closing Thoughts

Meekness is not weakness. The Hebrew word for “meek” conveys the idea of courageously bowing before God, submitting our cares and pain to His faithfulness.

To be meek is to have an elevated view of God and an appropriate view of oneself. The meek don’t try to carry the weight of the world so God can give it to them.

Praying with you,

Addison

There is hope, though. According to the proverb, while anxiety might weigh us down, just a single good word can reverse its effects, offering us courage in exchange for despair.

There’s a moment in Psalm 5 where David tells us to “be agitated (angry), and do not sin; ponder in your own hearts . . . and be silent.” As a poet and lyricist, David isn’t suggesting we abandon messy words but he knows a pondering posture eventually leads to powerful words of praise.

“I’ve been thinking a lot about circles lately. So much of life is defined by circles—our days, week, months, and years form circles for us to move in and through. We’re constantly reminded that the end of a thing has a way of taking us back to a beginning. It would seem the cosmos announces the Circle as God’s shape of choice…”
